I Don't Wanna Go HomeとHit the Ground and Runについて。

Scottyのホームシックを慰めるために前者を書いた、ということ。
大成功ですねぇAlan、最後に彼はMerry Menを寂しがってくれた。
Alanは割合バスで家を空けることに慣れてるからあれだけれど
(それも家族にとってはどうかと思うよ!)
Scottyはカリフォルニアからあんまり離れてないですよね……。
適合性の問題なのかしら。むー。
Alan神経が図太いんじゃないの?

New CD performance ready

It's great big wordplay that's impossible to resist.

So the moment I get Great Big Sea's lead singer on the phone I fairly burst out, "Alan A Doyle," mindful that Doyle plays Allan A'Dayle in the 2010 Russell Crowe blockbuster Robin Hood.

"It's been hard to convince people that that character wasn't named after me," says Doyle. "I tell them, 'Have you never read about Robin Hood and his Merry Men?' "

Crowe is a pal and recruited Doyle for the role. What isn't generally known was that Doyle originally turned the star down.

"He asked me if I could play the lute and I said I could," says Doyle. "He said to come down to Los Angeles and read for the part and that filming would start in September of 2008. But I said I couldn't do it because we were starting a 100-city tour then. And he said the shooting might be delayed and if he did, he'd call me."

That's exactly what happened and, in the spring of 2009, Doyle found himself on the set of the film in England. He also had buddies among Robin's Merry Men. Thunder Bay actor Kevin Durand (Little John) introduced Crowe to the music of Great Big Sea on the set of the 1999 hockey film Mystery, Alaska. Also in that film was Scott Grimes, who plays Will Scarlett in Robin Hood. Doyle and Grimes shared a trailer during the filming of the Sherwood Forest saga.

On the set of Robin Hood, Doyle even came up with the closing song for the new Great Big Sea CD. He and Grimes had a long drinking session in the pub and Grimes, a U.S. singer-songwriter off-screen, was feeling homesick.

"I said, 'Let's write a song,' " says Doyle. "And Scott said, 'I want to go home.' I said, 'how about I Don't Wanna Go Home.' I wrote the song on the walk home from the pub and sang it on his voice-mail. I wanted to give him a writing credit but he said he hadn't written a word."

Doyle and Crowe co-wrote the song Hit The Ground and Run.

"We were at his place in Australia and I said, 'How about a song about a shotgun wedding?' - and off we went," says Doyle.

One thing about Safe Upon The Shore is that it's performance ready. Great Big Sea comes to RBC Theatre at the John Labatt Centre on Wednesday. The tour supports Safe Upon The Shore (Warner). It's their 10th in 17 years together as a band.

"We haven't had a record in a long time that had so many excellent songs for concert," says Doyle. "There are five to seven already that we're playing and I can see as many as 10 being there. That's how you can tell how good a song is, by how long it stays on a band's set list."

Needless to say, that's why these days the band is playing two one-hour sets in concert with no opening act.

"That way we can play a lot more," says Doyle. "There's probably six or seven songs that we feel we have to play every night or people would be disappointed."

London fans may wonder where Great Big Sea might wind up after Wednesday's concert.

Sometimes, after a London gig, the band would gather for more music at the Brass Door, a pub on King St. The Brass Door closed recently.

When asked by The Free Press about the Brass Door years ago, Doyle was playful. "I've heard of it . . . my brother goes there all the time after our gigs," Doyle said then of the Brass Door buzz. "He's crazy, that one."

There's no word yet on where Doyle's "brother" might party after Wednesday's concert at the downtown London arena.
